Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

There has been significant long-term reductions in total UK VOC emissions of coatings across all coatings sectors, which can be seen in the graph. For example, decorative coatings are now 84% water-based. The industry has already achieved 2030 target with ten years to spare.

PaintCare

• Since 2016, the BCF has been working on developing PaintCare, an industry-led initiative aiming to create a circular economy for leftover paint in the UK.
  
  
• The PaintCare programme was set up in light of the fact that:
  
• 55 million litres (71,500 tonnes) of leftover decorative paint are generated in the UK each year – a figure that is likely even higher in 2020
• Only 2% of leftover paint is reused or remanufactured through schemes such as Community RePaint or companies such as Seagulls and Paint 360
• Only one in three Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) accept leftover paint for disposal

As an industry, we are currently discussing a potential national voluntary industry led scheme, including a consumer eco fee, which will generate sufficient funds to substantially change the waste profile of leftover paint, and create a vibrant re-use, recycling and remanufacturing solution.
