BCF Statement on Thermal Paint for BBC This Morning Live Programme

11 February 2025
‘The British Coatings Federation believes it very unlikely that paints applied in such thin coatings could lead to the type of insulating/thermal performance implied in some of the claims highlighted by the BBC investigation. The BCF firmly believes that any marketing claims about environmental performance need to be backed up by evidence and, in this case, we would suggest that this should include evidence of independent testing. We do not believe any BCF are making any such unevidenced claims about their own products.

We have seen an increase in false or misleading green claims over the last few years, from non-BCF members, and for this reason we have developed a Green Claims Guide for decorative paints, which can be found on our website.

However, it is also important to note that there are insulating coating systems on the market that do have evidence to support their efficacy and can be part of a solution, although these tend to be more complex, thicker products, and would often require professional application. Again, though, we are not aware of claims being made about such high savings in energy use.

The BCF is willing to investigate any cases of unrealistic marketing claims that are brought to its attention - whether they be about our members or non-members - in order to ensure there is a clarity of expectation for consumers and a level playing field for manufacturers.'
