BCF press release – Recognising sustainable best practice as Coatings Care 2023 finalists announced

07 September 2023

The British Coatings Federation (BCF) is celebrating best practice in environmental stewardship and sustainability with the announcement of its finalists for the 2023 Coatings Care Awards. The winners will be announced at the BCF Awards dinner on Thursday 19th October at The Grand Hotel in Birmingham. Information on the rest of the Awards categories is available here.

The number of sites taking part in the Coatings Care report reached its highest level in seven years, demonstrating the increased commitment of coatings companies to environmental and social responsibility. The latest figures show almost 50% of sites taking part reported producing zero waste for landfill compared to 28% a decade earlier. Overall energy consumption fell 6% compared to 2021, with the industrial coatings sector seeing a 13% decrease in that period. 60% of production waste is now recycled, compared with just 17% in 1996. Accident rates are well below the latest UK Labour Force Survey for manufacturing, with RIDDOR-reported incidents falling compared to 2021, with no fires recorded at any BCF member sites despite the increased participation.

The Coatings Care Overall Best Performer Award is presented to the company that has demonstrated best-in-class performance across a range of key performance indicators, such as energy and solvent usage, waste, recycling, and VOC emissions. BCF would like to thank Verlingue for sponsoring this award.

The companies shortlisted for the Coatings Care Overall Best Performer Award are:

  • Dacrylate Paints
  • Farrow and Ball
  • Pronto Industrial Paints
  • Teal & Mackrill
  • Tor Coatings

The Coatings Care Progress Award is presented to the company that has made the most significant year-on-year performance improvement. BCF are grateful to The Paint Foundation for sponsoring this award.

The shortlisted companies for the Coatings Care Progress Award are:

  • Becker Industrial Coatings
  • Flint Group
  • ITAC Adhesives
  • Jotun Paints (Europe)
  • Pulse Printing Products

The BCF Coatings Care environmental programme records the progress of the UK coatings industry in protecting the health and welfare of its employees, safe operation of processes, and active contribution to a sustainable environment. Over the past 27 years, BCF members have made tremendous progress in production efficiency and environmental performance, as shown in the 45 health, safety and environment key performance indicators tracked by BCF.
